1931년 경기도 개풍 출생. 숙명여고를 졸업하고 서울대 국문과에 입학했으나 한국전쟁으로 학업 중단. 1970년 마흔살의 나이로 『여성동아』 장편소설 공모에 『나목(裸木)』이 당선되어 작품활동 시작. 소 설집으로 『부끄러움을 가르칩니다』 『배반의 여름』 『엄마의 말뚝』『해산바가지』 『저문 날의 삽화』 『한 말씀만 하소서』 『너무도 쓸쓸한 당신』 등과, 장편소설 『휘청거리는 오후』 『도시의 흉년』 『목마른 계절』 『살아있는 날의 시작』 『서 있는 여자』 『그해 겨울은 따뜻했네』『그대 아직도 꿈꾸고 있는가』 『미망(未忘)』 『그 많던 싱아는 누가 다 먹었을까』 『그 산이 정말 거기 있었을까』 『아주 오래된 농담』 등과, 『꼴찌에게 보내는 갈채』 『한 길 사람 속』 『어른노릇 사람노릇』, 『두부』 등 여러 권의 산문집을 간행함. 한국문학작가상(1980), 이상문학상(1981), 대한민국문학상(1990), 이산문학상(1991), 중앙문화대상·현대문학상(1993), 동인문학상(1994), 대산문학상(1997), 만해문학상(1999), 황순원문학상(2001) 수상.

 

Although Park Wan-seo did not begin her literary career until she was almost forty, she has since become one of the most prolific and popular authors in Korea. Since her debut in 1970 with The Naked Tree, Park has been showered with numerous honors, including the Manhae Literature Prize, the Daesan Literature Prize and the Korean Literature Award. A storyteller of considerable gifts, Park is noted for her skillful employment of concrete details and compelling episodes drawn from everyday life, as well as her verbal dexterity and natural flow of her narrative that render her works both accessible and engaging.
