In the early years of modern Korean juvenile literature, Hyun Duck (1909-?) wrote short stories that vividly recreate the world of children’s games. Due to his defection to North Korea during the Korean War, however, his name was taboo and hence unknown for a long time in South Korea. It is only since the late 1990’s that his works have been unearthed and reintroduced. Nevertheless, they have quickly captured the hearts of readers with their realistic depiction of the world of children as created through wordplay and games.
