1977년 경남 진주에서 태어나 상명대 만화학과를 졸업했다. 1998년 서울문화사 신인만화공모전으로 데뷔했다. 대표작으로 『공룡 둘리에 대한 슬픈 오마주』 『습지생태보고서』 『대한민국 원주민』 『100도씨』 『울기엔 좀 애매한』 『지금은 없는 이야기』 『지옥』(전2권, 공저) 등이 있다. 한국 리얼리즘 만화의 계보를 잇는 명장으로, 최규석의 작품은 국내를 넘어 유럽·미국·일본·중국에서도 번역 출간되어 전세계 독자들의 사랑을 받고 있다. 서울 국제만화애니메이션축제 단편상, 대한민국 만화대상 우수상, 한국출판문화상 아동청소년 부문 대상, 이탈리아 루카만화축제 옐로키드상 등을 수상했다. 최규석의 역작 『송곳』은 오늘의 우리만화상, 대한민국 콘텐츠대상 문화체육관광부장관상, 부천만화대상을 수상했고, 프랑스 앙굴렘 국제만화축제 공식 경쟁 부문 수상후보로 올랐다. Born in 1977 in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province, Choe Gyu-seok studied cartoon and animation (BFA) at SangMyung University and made his debut as a cartoonist with the selection of his work in a competition hosted by a magazine in 1998. Recipient of Dong-A LG International Festival of Comics, Cartoon, Character Design, and Animation (DIFECA) for his “The Cola Man” in 2002 and the Comics Readers’ Award and the Presidential Award for Outstanding Leaders of the 21st Century in 2003, he was invited to the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2003 and selected among “New Cultural Stars” by the daily Hankyoreh in 2006. His works include A Report on the Ecology of Marshes and A Sad Homage to Dooly the Dinosaur. Currently, he serializes “The Natives of the Republic of Korea” in the weekly Hankyoreh 21.
