서울에서 태어나 1988년 계간 『창작과비평』에 단편 「동트는 새벽」을 발표하며 작품활동을 시작한 이후, 예리한 통찰력과 속도감 있는 문장으로 현실의 부조리를 그려내 한국문단의 대표적인 작가로 자리잡았다. 불합리와 모순에 맞서는 당당한 정직성, 동시대 사람들과 함께 호흡하는 뛰어난 감수성으로 독자들의 뜨거운 호응을 얻은 작품들을 발표해왔다. 소설집 『인간에 대한 예의』 『존재는 눈물을 흘린다』 『별들의 들판』 『할머니는 죽지 않는다』, 장편소설 『더이상 아름다운 방황은 없다』 『그리고, 그들의 아름다운 시작』 『무소의 뿔처럼 혼자서 가라』 『고등어』 『착한 여자』 『봉순이 언니』 『우리들의 행복한 시간』 『사랑 후에 오는 것들』 『즐거운 나의 집』 『높고 푸른 사다리』, 산문집 『상처 없는 영혼』 『공지영의 수도원 기행』 『빗방울처럼 나는 혼자였다』 『네가 어떤 삶을 살든 나는 너를 응원할 것이다』 『괜찮다, 다 괜찮다』 『아주 가벼운 깃털 하나』 『공지영의 지리산 행복학교』 『딸에게 주는 레시피』 『시인의 밥상』 등을 출간했다. 21세기문학상, 한국소설문학상, 오영수문학상, 앰네스티 언론상 특별상, 가톨릭문학상, 이상문학상 등을 수상했다.

 

Gong Jiyoung has been considered one of the most eminent Korean writers since the mid-1990s. With delicate and refined sensibilities, this pioneer of Korean feminism has written a series of books on feminism, for which she has gained the attention of readers and literary critics alike. In her literary world of Korean youth from the 1980s, she intensely gropes for answers to their problems, while accepting as part of life the absurdities of the time and society. Gong continues to devote much of her creative energy to the issue of women and laborers, or those underprivileged and discriminated members of Korean society.
