Born in Hamgyeong-do in North Korea, Lee Hochol experienced the tragedy of the Korean War firsthand. A prolific writer as well as activist, he participated in the movement against Park Chunghee's dictatorial regime. His involvement with the pro-democracy movement in the 1970s convinced Lee that the tragic and even absurd reality shaped by the military dictatorship was deeply rooted in the state of national division. National division resualting from the Korean War is the topic that has engaged Lee's literary imagination. The honors he has received include the Dong-in Literature Prize and the Korean Literature Award.
