
Born in 1925 in Miryang, South Gyeongsang Province, Lee Woo-sung studied Korean history (BA and Ph D) at Sungkyunkwan University. He has served as a professor at his alma mater, head of the Daedong Institute for Korean Studies, an endowed professor at Yonsei University, and head of the Korean Classics Research Institute and is currently a member of the National Academy of Sciences, head of the Toegye Studies Institute, and director-general of the Korean Classics Research Institute. He has penned academic papers including “Confucian Politics during the Joseon Dynasty and the Existence of ‘Scholar-Officials’,” “Land and Corvée Relations during the Goryeo Dynasty,” and “The Influence of Tang Law on Legal Judgments and Restrictions” and authored and edited numerous volumes including The Development of Korean History and Its Culture (published by Changbi), The Image of History in Korea(published by Changbi), A Study of Medieval Korean Society, Selected Writings(published by Changbi), Annotated Translation of Inscriptions on the Four Mountain Steles from the Silla Dynasty, The Discovery of Korean Classics, Dosan Confucian Academy, and A History of Toero-ri. He has also jointly edited The Historical Consciousness of Korea, vols. 1-2 (published by Changbi).
