1951년 대구에서 태어나 이화여대 조소과를 졸업했다. 1974년 『문학사상』 제1회 신인상에 단편소설 「근(根)」 「오픈 게임」이 당선되어 작품 활동을 시작했으며, 시대의 상처와 젊은 세대의 고뇌를 그린 중편소설 「숲 속의 방」으로 오늘의 작가상을 수상했다. 이후 당대 사회에 화합하지 못하는 개인의 고독한 방황, 진실한 삶을 찾아 고뇌하며 구원을 모색하는 인물 등을 그려왔다. 소설집 『밤과 요람』 『숲 속의 방』, 장편소설 『청색시대』 『가까운 골짜기』 『세상의 별은 다, 라사에 뜬다』 『내 안의 깊은 계단』 『미불(米佛)』 등이 있다. 장편동화로는『인도로 간 또또』(1994), 산문집으로『일하는 예술가들』(1986)『인도기행』(1990) 등이 있다.

 

Originally a student of fine arts, Kang Sok-kyong stumbled into a literary career quite accidentally when she entered a creative writing contest to raise tuition for graduate studies in sculpture and art criticism. Her talent was unmistakable from the beginning, and for more than thirty years since her debut, she has remained a respected writer. Kang has focused on the search for the self in her fiction. Kang recognizes that life is filled with diverging roads and attendant dilemmas, which allow us a glimpse into our true selves. Many of her works also concern the inhumanity she finds within Korean society.
