| The Manhae Prize for Literature was established by Changbi Publishers, Inc. in 1973 in order to commemorate the achievements of "Manhae" (Han Yong-un) and to contribute to the development of the national literature by succeeding his literary spirit. This prize was revived in spring 1988 along with The Quarterly Changbi. So far, this prize has been awarded for such works as Peasants' Dance by Shin Kyung-rim (awarded at the first ceremony in 1974), Shrieks of a Yellow Dog by Chun Sung-se, The Star of My Homeland by Ko Un, The Shadow of Arms by Hwang Sok-yong, A Windy Island by Hyun Ki-young, A Windy Day by Min Yong, A Coniferous Zone by Kim Myong-su, The Tale of Master Yu by Lee Mun-gu, and General Noktu [Mungbean ] by Song Ki-suk. This prestigious literary prize has caught the attention of literary circles and the general public alike. Prizewinners are selected every year (except 1998) for literary works (a collection of poems, short stories, novels, plays, criticism, etc.) which have been produced during the preceding three years, based on strict criteria. The prize money is 10 million won (approximately US$ 10,000). |
